The back row of checkers on either side is called the “home row.” It’s best to keep this row in reserve until you need the pieces most. It may seem like you’re more vulnerable to attacks from this position, but ultimately, claiming the center will give you more mobility. However, it’s best to advance your pieces toward the center.
Rookie players sometimes rely on the sides of the board for safety, since pieces on the sides cannot be jumped. Not to worry though, there are a few key strategies that you can use to win some games. While Checkers is not quite as popular as a game like Chess, there is still a lot of strategy involved. You win by removing all of your opponent's pieces from the board, or if your opponent can't make a move. They can even combine jumps forward and backward on the same turn! Kings can move and jump diagonally in any direction. If one of your pieces gets to the opposite side of the board (your opponent's back row), it will turn into a King. If after jumping, your piece could make another jump, it is allowed to make additional jumps. To capture an opponent's piece and remove it from the board, you need to "jump" over their piece with one of yours. Your pieces can only move forward one tile diagonally (they always stay on the brown tiles). Use your finger to move your pieces around the board. The goal of Checkers, or "Draughts", is to remove all your opponent's pieces from the board. the computer, or against an online opponent! Now I played as white against IM Srdjan Sale, and he surprised me with the Alekhine Defense.Play vs. However, in the fourth round I had lost as black against a GM in the King’s Indian, in a game where I basically did not get out of the opening, which was very dispiriting. The tournament had started all right, with an easy win in round one against a 2250, a draw as black in the king’s Indian against a GM, then a draw with white against a GM where I was pressing a little bit but couldn’t make progress.
This was the fifth round game of my most recent tournament, the Zagreb Open. With the help of a pretty tactic, White was able to say “queen me”. Yet an important zwischenzug altered the sequence, and finally at the end White was left technically down in material, but with two powerful passed pawns in the center. While White is carrying out the “checkers-style” captures, annihilating the black center, black is carrying out his own sequence, with his f-pawn mowing down a row of white pieces. What we are talking about here is the combinative destruction of the pawn chain, undermining it at the base.
Yet occasionally in chess you get the chance to do the same thing, such as in the following game. Especially if you are a kid, I am sure there is nothing more fun than hopping over and capturing three or four pieces on one turn, then piling them up by the side of the board. Perhaps you even played more than a few games before deciding, as Rashid Nezhmetdinov did, that chess is just the better game (I hope nobody gets mad about that…) However, there is one pleasure of checkers that chess does not usually afford you – the multiple hops on diagonals, capturing several pieces in a row. As chess players, most of us have probably at some point played a game or two of checkers.
